..a letter from Laurie, Konwinski… Dear Immigrant Rights advocates, A couple weekends ago, a group of Ithaca area residents joined 100 other folks (including many young adults) from around the state in attending a Movement Building Training organized by Reform Immigration for America, a national group that is launching a campaign to get Comprehensive Immigration Reform passed this year. It’s a tall order, but the energy and enthusiasm coming out of that training gives me hope! We need the help of everybody who has been part of the Tompkins County Immigrant Rights Coalition, which is why I’m writing to you today. We’ll be meeting this FRIDAY, JANUARY 22 at 1:30 pm at the Workers Center so please join us. Our efforts in New York State are especially concentrated on Senator Schumer and on seven key NY Congressional reps. Rep. Maurice Hinchey is NOT on the list (as he is considered an ally) so our Ithaca group plans to focus our attention on Senator Schumer. Over the coming months, we are looking to gather many signatures of support, hold educational events to encourage many more people to get involved, and lend our support to people working in some of the nearby targeted Congressional districts (particularly those of Rep. Eric Massa and Rep. Dan Maffei). Mostly we want to keep the pressure on Senator Schumer to truly LEAD on this issue, and to introduce a Senate bill for real and comprehensive reform. We need your ideas, passion and ability to bring more people on board. We’d love to see you on Friday. If you can’t attend, but are interested in joining, please respond via the tc-immigrant-rights-center@googlegroups.com list serve.
